TDOY Presents The Dick Van Dyke Show Blogathon on October 3rd
Thursday, August 18, 2011
My BBFF Ivan of Thrilling Days of Yesteryear has announced his first ever blogathon: The Dick Van Dyke Show Blogathon held on October 3, 2011.
I am woefully late with this announcement, so I hope you all will forgive me. While there are no steadfast rules that you cannot do an episode that has already been chosen, people do seem to be claiming episodes pretty quickly, so you may want to head over there ASAP.
More about the blogathon in Ivan's own words:
October 3, 2011 will mark the fiftieth birthday of the debut of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and while I’ve already been tapped to do a write-up at ECOF (Edward Copeland on Film…and More for you laymen and laywomen), I decided to go the extra mile and see if this might not be the perfect vehicle for TDOY’s very first blogathon. The Dick Van Dyke Show is my favorite situation comedy of all time, hands down—-and so I’m pleased as the proverbial Hawaiian Punch to announce that Thrilling Days of Yesteryear is going to host a ‘thon in honor of this timeless classic.
Now, ostensibly I’d like the entries in the blogathon to be about the actual show: observations, favorite episodes, etc. but because flexibility has always been the by-word here, I’m certainly not going to limit you as to what you’d like to write about. If you want to do a biographical sketch...fine and dandy. If you want to review a film from Dick Van Dyke’s voluminous oeuvre (“Hmm...I don’t think anyone’s ever really addressed the existentialism in Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N...”), have at it. I’d even be up for insights on some of the actor’s other TV ventures, like The New Dick Van Dyke Show or Diagnosis Murder. The only stipulation (and it’s more of a guideline than a rule) is that you tie your contributions in some way (no matter how tortured your logic has to be) to The Dick Van Dyke Show.
I know I say I'm excited about every blogathon I post here, but kids, I am excited about this blogathon. The second Ivan mentioned he was considering a blogathon, I sent him an email with I CLAIM "THE MASTERPIECE" in a 98-point blinking red sparkly font. Of course, I can't really claim anything, but... well, do you really want to test me on this? I submit to you that you do not. However, if you tell me which episode the classic "Coffee? Doughnut? Toupee?" triple is from, I will forgive you almost anything.
While I may be a little late getting this post up, the good news is that there are several weeks for you to pick an episode and write a post on it -- heck, pick two, others have -- so clear your calendars and watch some TV. For the full details and instructions, visit Thrilling Days of Yesteryear.

I am so excited about this one. I "claimed" Coast to Coast Big Mouth, or what I always call "Alan's Hair." Seen it a billion times and always laugh like a fool!
Wish I could remember the episode you mention. Sounds like something Buddy would say to Mel, but it also could be something the coffee cart guy might say. Hmmm....I'll have to think about this one.
It was definitely Buddy to Mel -- Nick at Nite used to show the clip in a commercial as a classic triple (and people on TVTropes of course included it as such, too) but I cannot find what episode it's from.
I love Alan's assortment of toupees.
