Happy 80th Birthday, William Shatner

Monday, March 21, 2011

William Shatner is 80 years old today! It's hard to believe. Someone should capture his energy and use it to power a small city.

I would like to direct you all to The Lightning Bug's Lair, where his yearly You Don't Know Shat series is well under way! Very highly recommended. You will not see a greater collection of Shatneria anywhere else.

I'm sure they're reading the 1967 issue with the "Star Blecch" parody, but for my money, the 1976 parody musical "Keep on Trekkin'" was the best of the Mad Magazine parodies, if for no other reason than "A Crew That's Dispensable" is really damn catchy. Photo courtesy Laughing Squid, which has more pictures and links to even more pictures.

I have a Shatner-related post ready to go for tomorrow and it involves that photo of Shatner and Nimoy shoveling food in their faces!

I didn't know today is his birthday...my upcoming post is to celebrate a Star Trek-loving blogger's birthday.

As a fellow Canadian, I'm proud of The Shat.

I have had that picture forever, and every time I see it I freak because they might get food on their costumes. Wear a bib, you guys!

NO WAY! He's 80???? I didn't even think he'd hit 70 yet. No wonder everybody's so enamoured of him.

Shatner's lunch? I'm guessing cheesy ham.

The best "Star Trek" parody was actually in an X-rated magazine, I seem to recall - at one point Scotty is proclaiming "Ma engines canna stand the strain!" - and I remember The Congress of Wonders sketch, "Star Trip" on their 1971 album "Revolting" was pretty funny.

Thanks so much for the mention Stacia. I will be celebrating Mr. Shatner tomorrow with a look into his performance in Star Trek The Motion Picture, and I still have much more coming this month.

Captain Kirk is 80. Man, that sucks. I can't believe it!

I love that picture of Shatner and Nimoy looking at MAD - so typical of the two of them. Nimoy does not look amused. He always took things very seriously. Shatner’s grinning, though. Say what you will about Shatner, he always had a good sense of humor about himself.

That look of quiet concentration as he gets his next bite of food off that flimsy paper plate is just mesmerizing.

I can't wait, TL! It's all been terrific already, so it's a treat to know there's more ahead.

One of my favorite Star Trek parodies was a retro-radio program called "Sterling Bronson: Space Engineer."

It can be heard at this link:
