Set Your Recorders: "Sunnyside Up" (1929) on TCM December 21st

Friday, December 17, 2010

Hot cookies, Agnes, "Sunnyside Up" (1929) is going to be on TCM! Twice! It's on this Tuesday, the 21st, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern -- that's prime time. If you miss it, it's going to be on March 16 at 12:00 noon Eastern

That gorgeous lobby card can be seen in all its enormous glory by clicking on it... and I want to direct you to the site I found it from: The WalterFilm Online Vintage Poster/Photo Museum. It's absolutely glorious. You'll lose an entire weekend there, so maybe save it until Monday so you can kill time at work instead of cutting into your free time. I know that's what I'm going to do. Note that much of it is in Swedish, but enough is in English that you should be able to navigate just fine. As long as you know either Swedish or English.

The lobby card is certainly cute!

It is adorable. I think anything with Janet Gaynor AND El Brendel is going to have a default level of cuteness.

This is an important early musical to catch. I first discovered it by adjusting my roof antenna (!) back in 1985 to pick up a local UHF station airing it. It wasn't the best reception anyway but I snared it on my VCR and have been enthralled with the movie since. I also saw it at Film Forum in NYC in the '90s, and it was great to see it connect with a modern audience. Marjorie White in particular is an absolute comedic gem. Tragically she died in a car accident in 1935, but she left us some vivacious performances to treasure.

Well, you wooed me with Fitzwilly so I'll take another chance with you.

Ooh, MJ, I have not seen this one! It might suck! Although King's reply makes me think it won't suck, and I do like early musicals, even when they're creaky.

This one is less creaky than what you may expect, starting with the elaborate opening shot. Give this film a chance--and El Brendel will not let you down! The "Turn on the Heat" number (though not my favorite) is one of the more notorious pre-code numbers you'll see. I prefer the "block party" sequence earlier. Anyway, I await your reactions.

Thanks for the link, Stacia!

This is the film that got me turned on to El. Certainly one of the better early talkie features and I think the entire cast works really well together. I caught this restoration (if that's what they are showing) about a month ago in NYC and it looked beautiful.

Did you have a chance to watch this last night, Stacia?

Janet Gaynor was adorable.

Come next big snowfall, I intend to replicate the igloo scene in my backyard.

Stacia said...

I did! What the heck with the igloo dance, anyway? They melt the igloos, then big long turgid trees start to grow and grow and grow and then? INFLATABLE BANANAS.

I know!

INFLATABLE BANANAS!!!

Weird soundtrack; from their high-pitched voices, it sounded as if everyone in the cast stood half a head shorter than Kristin Chenoweth. But that "Turn Up The Heat" number -- well, talk about heavy-handed eroticism...
