Interesting Stuff: The Halloween Edition
Tuesday, October 26, 2010

For whatever reason, a decent introductory paragraph isn't coming to me today, so let's just jump right in.
First, I want to give a shout-out to several fine blogs that have been gobs of fun this October:
Mr. Gable's Reality: Mr. Gable loves bad movies, and I love to read him loving these bad movies. This month, he has undertaken the epic task of counting down The 31 Greatest Bad Movies Charles Band Has Ever Produced. Unendingly awesome.
Arbogast on Film: The former Arboghost Von Schreckmacher is doing a series this month called 31 Screams and, as with everything else Arbo does, it's fabulous.
Chuck Norris Ate My Baby: He's doing a lengthy series of "Goosebumps" reviews, not just for October, but for forever. Or whenever the episodes end, I suppose. CNAMB is also a terrific site for upcoming horror movies scheduled on all sorts of channels that aren't even TCM! I know, right?
Also, I recommend hitting the Horror Blogger Alliance and start looking up some of the fine member blogs, many of whom are doing terrific things this month. HBA makes me wish I had a horror blog. There, I said it.

Speaking of movie schedules, I also want to mention TCM, which has been kicking ass all month with their Hammer horror films series, really ramps up the horror offerings starting on Friday. To see the whole schedule, start here on Friday, but I wanted to point out a few highlights.
A few don't-miss movies on TCM Friday are:
11:30 AM "Isle Of The Dead" (1945)
3:30 PM "White Zombie" (1932)
4:45 PM "I Walked With A Zombie" (1943)
6:00 PM "Curse of the Demon" (1958)
The first 3 have been previously featured on SBBN, and with good reason. "Curse" hasn't been posted here yet out of sheer lack of time, not for lack of desire. The TCM print of "White Zombie" is the best I've seen, so if you don't have "White Zombie" or only have that rotten PD print, grab it Friday from TCM while you can.
Speaking of Bela, TCM is showing "The Corpse Vanishes" (1942) early Friday afternoon followed by "The Devil Bat" (1940). TCV is one of those good bad movies I really enjoy and I would recommend it, if that's your thing. "Devil Bat"... no. The first time I saw this was as a kid on "Matinee at the Bijou" back in the 70s, and the print and sound were so bad I thought the actors were scared of a "Denver bat". It was a hell of a lot more interesting that way, let me tell you, although there is some entertainment value in the big floppy rubber bat on a string.
Friday evening are more Hammer horror films, this time with a Frankenstein theme and all starring Peter Cushing. Underground on Friday night/Saturday morning is "Carnival Magic" (1982) and "Berserk" (1967), the Joan Crawford film. Also starring Diana Dors! Watch it!
Saturday morning is Karloff morning, with "The Devil Commands" (1941), "The Ghoul" (1933), and "The Walking Dead" (1936). All excellent choices. Sadly, the version of "The Old Dark House" they are showing is the 1963 version and not the Karloff version, but at least it's the beginning of a 5-movie William Castle marathon, which ends with "Mr. Sardonicus" (1961) and "Strait-Jacket" (1964) just before prime time on Saturday.
Overnight Saturday is one of my faves, "Mad Love" (1935), and a Tourneur I haven't seen before, "The Leopard Man" (1945) starring Dennis O'Keefe. How much O'Keefe is in this movie?
Sunday is Halloween proper and a fun day all around, starting with the light romantic comedy "Freaks" (1932), a brief jaunt to the the subtle "Bucket of Blood" (1959) in the afternoon, then ending at the art house documentary "House of Wax" (1953) just before prime time. More classic horror films are scheduled for Halloween night, and even though we've seen them all a million times already, they'll be great to have on as background while kids plunder our candy jars.

HOLY $%!&!!!!!1! You mentioned me on your blog. You, dear, are awesome!
And just you wait...The Top 5 Charles Band movies start tomorrow...and they are beyond the amazingness that you have seen already.
Also...I wish I had cable. Actually I wish I still had that free cable I was getting until Comcast switched to digital. That was sweet! TCM sounds so awesome this week. I've always wanted to see The Freaks. I guess I'll have to hope to catch it on some 50 movie pack that I'll undoubtedly purchase in the future.
Because for one reason or another I HAVE to own every movie in existence. EVERY MOVIE.
Except for The Hottie and the Nottie. I'm not touching that filthy thing.
You can cuss on SBBN, it's okay. Or I guess I should say HOLY FUCKING SHIT, YOU CAN FUCKING CUSS ON SBBN!
It's funny you mention "The Hottie and the Nottie," because I'm planning on doing the White Elephant Blogathon next year, and that's one of the films I'm specifically terrified of getting.
Strait-Jacket...
Joan Crawford with an axe.
YES!
Fuck Yeah! Thank you for letting me know Stacia. I kinda felt like I might be trashing your blog if I swore. It's pretty fancy here compared to my shithole.
(That's a compliment...if you can believe it)
Can't wait to see Leila Hyams getting her freak on this Sunday!
I'm hosting a screening Of I Walked With A Zombie on Saturday. It's going to be awesome.
If I was anywhere near you, Bryce, I'd crash your screening.
MJ is right. Joan Crawford with an axe is one of the most beautiful sights in the world.
Definitely tune in "The Leopard Man." I won't say it's better than "Cat People" but I liked it more and I loved "Cat People."
You is just too kind, darlin'! Sorry, fake Southern accents don't exactly translate all too well in the written form, but I do thank very much for the mention!
I remember seeing The Corpse Vanishes on MST3K many, many moons ago ("Peekaboo!") but I'd like to see it comment free. So I am definitely recording that one.
I was also going to grab The Devil Bat but you've waved me off it. Thank you for this invaluable service!
I was already excited about "Leopard Man," but now I'm more excited, WB.
I'm with ya, Shady. Leila Hyams: Not a great actress, but lovely to watch all the same.
Matt, you have consistently awesome features, so it's easy to give CNAMB a shout-out.
Ivan, some people dig on "Devil Bat" for it's badness, because it does involve aftershave and bats on strings. Seriously. I just can't get past how freakin' BAD it is, though, I think because it deliberately tries to be funny in spots. You might want to go ahead and give it a shot.
