The Alarm of the Black Cat by D.B. Olson, a pseudonym of author Dolores Hitchens. This is one of several cat-themed Rachel Murdock Mysteries written by Hitchens in the 1930s and '40s.

I knew there was a modern sub-genre of cat-themed mysteries but I had no idea there were such things back in the 30s. Nice cover design.

D: I was also surprised that there was a 1930s-era cat mystery series, although I don't know if even THIS series was the first. It probably goes back to cats being associated with all types of superstitious whatnot.
