Anna May and Marlene
Friday, June 4, 2010
For your weekend enjoyment, some authentic digital representations of beauty and fun. The first group of pics are from the Life archive, featuring Anna May Wong, Marlene Dietrich, and Leni "Whoops I'm a Nazi" Riefenstahl at the premier of "Der Blaue Engel" (1930). I'll never stop being disappointed that not a single person at the premier sported a monocle. The second group of pics are promotionals from Anna May's and Marlene's movie "Shanghai Express" (1932). Postcard provided by the always terrific Operator 99 of Allure.

I just adore Shanghai Express so much. I'm a shameless von Sternberg fanboy, and an equally shameless Marlene Dietrich fanboy.
Great pictures!
I love 'Der Blaue Engel' - I first saw it many years ago in the English-language version, in a rare big-screen showing, and only caught the German one much more recently (I hadn't realised until then that there were two versions shot simultaneously.) Wonderful pictures.
"Whoops I'm a Nazi" -- I'm just glad I wasn't drinking any liquids when I read this.
I cannot tell you how much I love Shanghai Express.
"It took more than one man to change my name to Shanghai Lily..."
SO great.

I am ashamed to say I have not yet seen "Shanghai Express." It's on my list because I pretty much love everything about it already, even without having seen it yet.
Ivan: I tease Leni Riefenstahl because she deserves it.
If you love Dietrich in von Sternberg movies then you'll certainly love Shanghai Express . And even if you're not a slobbering von Sternberg fanboy (like me) it's probably the most approachable of the von Sternberg/Dietrich movies for the non-cultists.
It's more plot-driven than the others they did together. Dietrich is particularly good, and Anna May Wong is excellent.
I really want to see it, but unfortunately need to wait until it's on Netflix or on TCM again. I'm sure TCM has shown it, I just didn't record it. Yet I recorded "Tentacles". Some days I don't understand myself.
I have both Shanghai Express and Tentacles on DVD! Tentacles is included in a two-movie set with Empire of the Ants, another bona fide classic of world cinema. Joan Collins vs giant killer ants. What more could you want?
