Set Your Recorders: "The Oscar" 1966 on Sunday
Saturday, March 6, 2010

Update: Since many haven't yet seen "The Oscar" and won't until Sunday, and since "The Oscar" has a really nifty surprise ending, don't put spoilers in the comments. Also, if anyone doesn't want to be spoiled, don't read my previous entry on "The Oscar" which I link to below. There is a spoiler warning there, but I figured another one here wouldn't hurt.
TCM is having a night of Oscar-themed movies on March 7th because... I dunno, someone named Oscar was born that day or something. The first movie of the night is the confounding "The Oscar" (1966). It allegedly starts 8:00 PM Central, but remember that I'm notoriously wrong about these things, so check your listings.
"The Oscar" was previously seen here on SBBN for the Movies About Movies Blogathon. At the time I said it was so bad it missed camp and went straight to unbearable, but no one else seems to agree with me, and I'm thinking of giving it another shot. Or I may decide to chew my own foot off instead. Whichever sounds the most pleasant.
Pic of "The Oscar" star Stephen Boyd from what must have been a quality, quality film courtesy Brian's Drive-In Theater, which has the most comprehensive page of Boyd information you'll ever find.
In unrelated news, I feel I owe you all an apology. All hell broke loose at my new job this week and, on top of that, I got a cold. I haven't checked in on your blogs and I haven't even looked at my own -- that's why I forgot to tell you "Big Bad Mama" (1974) is on TCM tonight in about 35 minutes. I'll try to be better about blogging in the future.
Which leads me to a question: Are there any good blogathons going on lately or coming up soon? Let me know in the comments.

It sounds so promisingly camp, so it's disappointing if it doesn't make it. I don't know if they'll be showing it here.
That's a shame. Thanks for watching for us!
Dod Tom just leave a spoiler?!?!? Shame.
I plan to watch The Oscar. Because I sure never watch the real Oscars! The balance between camp and awful is sometimes precarious. I've seen a lot of commentary lately about the over the top delilghts of this film so I look forward to giving it a shot.
Tony Bennett's performance is terrible. Good think he stuck to singing.
Tom, I deleted your comment because it was a spoiler, but that was the EXACT part I liked, too. Also liked seeing Edith Head.
I'll go edit this entry with a note about spoilers, just in case.
Ok, but it's the only scene I remember. In my opinion, the entire movie is a spoiled, rotten egg.
Hello, just ran across this place, I am a big TCM fan and would rather watch the creakiest oldest B&W forgotten-stars soap opera than any reality show...I've seen The Oscar a number of times, it's a real hoot, full of bad dialogue, overacting, and overstuffed women (hello, Elke Sommer) in beehive hairdos and sexy lingerie - of the early 60's, that is. The Oscar would pair up nicely on a double bill with The V.I.P.s, starring Richard Burton trying to woo back his wife, Elizabeth Taylor, who has hooked up with some...gigolo! Talk about overstuffed! It, too, is a real hoot.
"full of bad dialogue, overacting, and overstuffed women (hello, Elke Sommer) in beehive hairdos and sexy lingerie"
Sally, that's everything I love about movies!
Elke Sommer and beehive hairdos equals total cinematic bliss! The decline of the beehive hairdo marked the beginning of the end for our civilisation.
