Set Your Recorders: Putney Swope (1969)

Thursday, November 5, 2009

TCM is showing "Putney Swope" Friday night on their Underground segment. It's on at 2:00 AM Eastern on Saturday morning (that's late Friday night). Last I knew the DVD was discontinued, but while looking it up on TCM I discovered it's still available at Movies Unlimited. So this isn't a huge Set Your Recorders emergency, but it's still something I think a lot of you will be interested in.

Another Robert Downey Sr. movie is being shown the same night: "Greasers Palace" from 1972. So that's neat.

Also, I'd like to mention that SBBN just reached 100,000 hits since it first opened a little over 2 years ago. Thank you all!

F**kin' A!! Saw Putney Swope in '74 on a midnight double bill - with Greaser's Palace!!! Damn, that's a Twilight Zoner.

GP sucks, mostly, not nearly as good as Putney Swope, a game changer of an indy film. The first board meeting in the film is awesome, and the Coen Bros. musta watched that closely, for Hudsucker. Do Not Miss This Film.

I've seen several bits and pieces of PS over the years, but have never seen the entire film on TV on any channel. But I recall sitcoms in the 70s making jokes about it every so often, so it's one of those films I've wanted to see since I was a very very young kid.

Yep, Putney Swope is essential. That board scene is great. It rubbed me the wrong way that Putney got dubbed by Downey, but it's still interesting to watch.
I'll probably watch Greaser's Palace, not seen it yet.

I saw the end of the Last Emperor, then saw the TCM dude say something about a movie about advertising. Sounded lame, but I decided to not go to bed long enough to see the first scene.

Needless to say I was hooked. Wow. XD

A wee note: If you're going to post here just to pimp your own blog, don't bother. I'll delete your post. Again. Comments are reserved for people who actually, you know, comment on the blog entry.

I see Putney Swope as the anti-Mad Men: people in it are nasty, avaricious, and cutthroat, and seem like they really mean it, rather than just wear nice clothes and pose.

Saw "Putney Swope" when it came out at the (now restored after being closed for years) Fox theater in downtown Tucson. I remember it being hilarious. I'm glad it holds up.

Larry, I have never been to the Fox Theater, but I will never forget it. A couple years ago during online class, the teacher gave us a mnemonic that used the words "movies" and "Fox Theater." Some student piped up and said "The Fox Theater doesn't show movies." Someone else said "The one in Tuscon does!" Thus began a chatroom fight during class that lasted 10 minutes as everyone ranted and raved about their own towns' Fox Theaters.
