The End of the Hiatus

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

The hiatus is over and I have a few things to say. Of course. When do I not have a few things to say? Start napping now, kids, this is the antithesis of exciting. For those who can't nap, I have illustrated this entry with pictures of Ziegfeld Girls. All are from my own collection, the last one is from Dr Macro's gallery, and are as SFW as a 1920s Ziegfeld Girl portrait can be. Hey, maybe you should just go to Dr Macro's instead of reading the rest of this. It's a thought.

First: You probably didn't see anything happening on the blog, but let me assure you that I was (dis)organizing like a mad woman. If the sidebar was a tangible thing and not a virtual chunk of HTML, I'd have accidentally knocked it over and smothered under the weight of it all. Short story: Links were lost. As it stands, I think I have recovered most links for the Blogroll, Webroll, and in the Google Gadget Thingamawhatsit, but of course I may have lost a few. Le sorry.

Next: Posting should be back to the semi-regular schedule I had before the hiatus. Just keep in mind now and forever that I am busy with school, fuzzy cats, a fuzzy husband, and laundry. Always with the damn laundry. While I find my health has improved quite a bit since I started blogging, with improved health comes the opportunity to do things I couldn't do when I was sick. That's also keeping me busy. Sometimes I even go outside!

Last: I need to say a few things. While I hate to be so negative, I would rather be blunt than misunderstood.

The hiatus was brought about by real life busy-makings, but also because there are jerks on the Internet. Yeah, I know, right? Who knew? The jerks I'm talking about should know who they are, so if you're scratching your head and wondering if I'm talking about you, then I'm not. Seriously, you will know if you are one of the aforementioned jerks.

What I say and do on my blog represents me and only me, and I don't give a good goddamn if you think it's "incredibly stupid" or "too serious" or "overanalytical" or whatever. Because for every person who thinks my posts are nothing but $5 words and philosophical nonsense, there are other bloggers who think my content is worthless, vapid fluff that doesn't go deep enough into the subject matter.

The name on this portrait was simply "Dolly". I don't know of a Ziegfeld Girl named Dolly, so take the name with a grain of salt.

Let me qualify this:
The people who I mentioned above bitch about SBBN elsewhere. They read something here and then go to other blogs, forums, on Usenet, and once even on r*dstate.c*m, if you can believe it, and whine about what I said.

Further, let me remind readers that I started SBBN to get away from jerks and juvenile behavior, because I wanted to have at least a semi-adult discussion about film topics. I was (and remain) tired of cooler-than-you hipster attitudes and immature remarks. Stuff like "that actor is so gay" or "how can she be a model when she has no boobies", or homophobia, racism, sexism or any other ridiculous bigotry. SBBN isn't going to host that kind of discussion.

What this all means is that I will no longer acknowledge jerkishness written outside of SBBN. On SBBN, comments will be deleted if necessary (a few comments went bye-bye during the hiatus). Of course, if anyone criticizes me directly I'll address what was said as long as it is mature and reasonable. If it's a ranty-flamey comment or particularly vile, it's gone.

I believe this is Ziegfeld Girl Drucilla Strain.

Return of Last: Some of you take photos very, very seriously. Some of you complain that I "steal" pictures. I don't.

* Any screencap on SBBN has been capped by me and won't be credited. There's no reason to credit myself. I don't take screencaps from others' sites for any reason. Also, please don't bother telling me someone has taken my screencaps and posted them as their own, because I already know.

* Promos, movie stills, and portraits I use are usually from 2 main places: Online auctions or photo websites and/or blogs. Online auctions like eBay, iOffer, or Profiles in History will not be credited unless I want to alert people to a new group of pics to go through. Websites, fansites, blogs, and communities will be credited.

* Stuff I get from other sites may not be credited if I don't know the source. Many pics I got years ago are so old I don't know where they came from, and the picture is no longer on the 'net as far as I can tell. Lots of these pics are from old Usenet binary groups and wouldn't have had a credit anyway. (And were from the days before watermarks. Imagine!) If I've lost the source, not crediting isn't intentional and doesn't reflect "stealing" the image.

Son of the Bride of Last: This is just a technical fiddly bit. Blogger adds HTML font tags all over my posts, and I've discovered it renders Google searches useless. When these font tags show up in the middle of words it splits them, and searchbots don't recognize the whole word. Example: If the word "diph{font=trebuchet}thong" looks like that in HTML, it won't be picked up as "diphthong" in a search. It will, however, get picked if someone happens to search on "diph" or "thong", though, and yes it has resulted in some people hitting my blog while searching for things like "Kirk Douglas Poo Thong". I have to manually go through all 120-odd posts on SBBN and remove these tags. Not fun, but if you were wondering why Google searches don't work, now you know.

So that's the end of that. Most of you can ignore everything I wrote here and just start checking back in every so often like you did before.

welcome back!!

I never even thought to credit my images.. I wonder if I should do that now.

I must say that I still think the overall design of the site is kick ass (even though it sucks that you had trouble with several elements in your sidebar not working well for you). Anyway, welcome back!

Thanks guys!

Kate, generally I wouldn't credit anything unless I was using someone's own personal scan. But a lot of people take photos very seriously, and I'm tired enough of people complaining that I wanted a post where I explained my own philosophy on the issue.

DJ, I can't really fault the design for my sidebar problems. It's all me, baby! I easily lose links or screw up pre-made sidebar gadgets. It's a curse.

And I just noticed that the pic of Drusilla Strain has her in the same see-through shawl and on the same scarf as the Ziegfeld Girl in the first picture. Is that Drusilla, too? I am SO BAD with faces.

Welcome back, it's lovely to see your posts again.

The Drusilla photos are delightful. Interestin, though, as the name isn't one you would generally identify with beauty. A villainess, perhaps, but not a Ziegfeld girl.
The issue of crediting photos is always an odd one. As you say, some get very worked up over them, but I'm glad to see you aren't taking such people (and the aforementioned jerks) seriously any longer. It's rather a waste of time.

Welcome back! I'm looking forward to reading your posts again.

I've been an active part of various internet communities for longer than I really care to admit, and yet it still amazes me just how petty some people can be. It's nothing personal, though; often they're just bored and looking for a problem to cause.

FDor some reason I'd always been led to believe that third picture is of Billie Burke. Doesn't much look like her though. Ho hum. Grand post as usual. :)

Stacia said...

I think Drucilla Strain and Billie Burke look similar, personally. That pic is part of a series of portraits Drucilla took with the same props and outfit, so I'm pretty sure it's her.

Here's a neat picture of Burke in 1919:

oh man those zeigfield girls are amazingly beautiful.thanks so much for sharing them!! Those poses are so very precious.

Stacia: Welcome back and, man, those Zeigfield girls are super hot! Youza!

Did I say welcome back? Your blog has always been beautiful and even more so now. Please don't let the unhappy few get you down. It's a loud minority that always wrecks ugly havoc on the very good, quiet, solid majority, isn't it? Trouble comes when they (the unhappy or unpleasant few) dominant the conversation.

Don't you worry yourself. The good ones are yours -- Mykal

Hey, great blog. 'Dolly refers to either Rose or Jenny Dolly known as the Dolly Sisters, wikipedia has an entry on them.

Stacia said...

Oh my gosh you're right, that IS one of the Dolly Sisters! It never even occurred to me that it would be them. Or one of them, I can't tell them apart of course. Thanks!

I love those Ziegfeld girl pictures. Real glamour and the ability to be sexy without being sleazy sre just two of the things we seem to have lost in the modern world.

Stacia said...

I agree, even the nude Ziegfeld Girl portraits are sexy without being raunchy. I love them. Of course I have a bazillion of them on my hard drive, but these were the only 3 that were worksafe. I promised everyone months ago I'd cuss like a sailor but never post any photos that were NSFW.

Some people are certainly weird about images on the internet. I understand it when they're original artworks or photographs people have taken, but I don't understand people getting worked up about things like screencaps. I post screencaps all the time and it's never occured to me that they're something you claim credit for.

Late to the game, sorry, but glad you're back! Intelligence was lacking for while without your input, and your image quality.

Stacia said...

By "intelligence" I'm sure you mean gathering intel in a government capacity. I cannot confirm or deny the existence of this intelligence.

The image titled Dolly was more then likely one of the Famous Dolly Sisters. It looks like Rosie. The Dolly Sisters performed with the Follies during the 1911/12 season. There is a picture of the twins in a very similar setting. Here is a link to a story about them and Harry Selfridge the grandfather of the modern day Department store. They were fascinating creatures indeed. Where did you find that image? I collect Dolly Sisters imagery and have yet to come across this one. Lovely site.
