The Monday Morning Question: 2009
Monday, January 5, 2009

I think most people forgo the New Years resolutions nowadays, but out of habit (and stunning naïveté) I always end up making a quick list of things I want to do in the upcoming year. This year, most of my goals involve movies. Some involve money, a few involve natural disasters, but mostly all I care about are movies.
Which brings me to my question: What are your film goals for the 2009 year?
While I have several smaller goals that I want to complete, my biggest goal is to watch as many Marie Prevost movies as I can find. Thus far it's not going so well, as I can't even find out if half of her films exist anymore. A few are on DVD or VHS, a few are bootleg, some show up on TCM, but a vast majority of her movies, especially silents, seem to be either lost or so forgotten that no one is even looking for them.
And I've heard a rumor that she's in a Mack Sennett short where she literally gets tied to the railroad tracks. What I wouldn't give to see that.

To watch more films about Japanese folklore and legend or any Japanese film which references such topics even if set in modern times. I also hope to watch any and all things directed by Takashi Miike.
Suggestions welcome.
Hmmmmmmmmmm. Not many film goals other than to see some more El Brendel films I haven't seen before and continue with the research.
My other goal is to finally get my book of photography printed this year. That is the big project/goal.
This could be the year I convert to Blu-Ray, if only as an excuse to get a 1080p flat panel. I already have a 720p which is just fine for Abbott & Costello, but I'd like to see new movies in their ultimate high tech glory. However, I'm seriously peeved by reports, like in today's NY Times, that the future is in streamlining movies from the net. No sir, movies are discs to be held like fine jewelry and placed on a shelf between viewings. No vaporous bytes in a hard drive for me!
Meanwhile, I hope to continue in this year finding amazing, rare stuff on YouTube. I wish WB would release a 5-disc Vitaphone set. I also would like to see more semi-lost films (held hostage in archives) be made available. I mean, why the wait???
I hope we get enough extra fun cash in the budget to actually get to go see movies again. :P
Other wise I hope I can revisit some of our DVDs in our collection, I neglect them too much.
I know what you mean about neglecting movies, beagle. I noticed today I have something like 12 DVDs that haven't even been removed from their wrappers!
Honestly, King, I would wait a year before going to Blu-Ray. I think 2009 is the year we'll find out if it'll really take off or if it's the new laserdisc.
Good luck with the book, Louie! Keep us posted!
Hey Ed, I found this list on Amazon UK with DVDs about Japanese folklore. You have a region free DVD player so you can surely find some good stuff. I'll email this to you, too.

12 still wrapped DVDs? Amateur! I think I have at least three dozen, some going back years, that are constantly staring at me to be viewed. I find myself re-watching old favorites more frequently, I guess.
If Blu-Ray tanks at least I'd still have a 1080p TV! This kind of rational will keep me in debt forever. :D
Well, a few of those DVDs are sets with something like 20 movies each on them. And I have another couple dozen that are open but still unwatched.
Maybe I'll re-wrap some DVDs and pretend they're new. ;-)
Case in point...last night I opted to watch THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN (1966) with Don Knotts again while as yet unviewed classics sat nearby. I need to take remedial Classics 101 in 2009...
I think you need an intervention, King.
A blog like this helps. ;D
